New releases for April 15, 2008

Here are the new releases for Tuesday the 15th of April. The biggest release this week, and what is sure to be #1 in sales, is Juno — the low budget movie that went on to become a huge success, garnering the Oscar for best original screenplay.

The Perfect Storm Blu-ray floods retailers on July 22

The Perfect Storm makes its Blu-ray debut on July 22 from Warner Home Video. Nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound, The Perfect Storm includes English Dolby TruHD sound and picture in 1080p.

The Perfect Storm is based on the true-life best selling novel by Sebastian Junger, and stars George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and Diane Lane in the story of six crew members on the fishing boat, Andrea Gail and their grueling battle with an unheralded natural disaster at sea.

Special features include commentary with Wolfgang Petersen, S. Fangmeier, H. Elswit and Sebastian Junger along with a James Horner Featurette, an HBO First Look special and a photo gallery.

PlayStation 3 gets DTS-HD Master Audio support

On April 15th, Sony will release yet another firmware update for the PlayStation 3. This one will probably interest you if you’re an audiophile and have a nice surround sound setup in your living room.

Firmware version 2.3 will add support for the DTS-HD Master Audio (MA) and DTS-HD High Resolution (HR). This update, along with the recent BD-Live firmware update, allows the PS3 to play all Blu-ray titles at their fullest potential.

Brian Towne of DTS commented, “We are extremely pleased that [Sony] is adding the full spectrum premium DTS-HD Master Audio codec into the PS3 so that more than 10 million owners of one of the best selling computer entertainment systems can have the best sounding, most efficient and flexible audio technology available system as well. DTS-HD Master Audio is fast becoming the must-have feature for high definition entertainment enthusiasts.”

Blockbuster to carry Blu-ray at all locations

Blockbuster has announced that starting this week, they will offer Blu-ray rentals and sales in all of their corporate locations, in both the US and Canada. Previously, Blockbuster offered Blu-ray in about 1,700 stores. That number will increase to nearly 5,000 stores.

Blockbuster will also install Blu-ray kiosks that feature a 42 inch high definition TV displaying Blu-ray movies via a PlayStation 3.

Blockbuster will also support their local franchises by offering support for adding Blu-ray to their locations.

John Mayer concert Blu-ray coming this summer

This summer, a new CD/DVD & Blu-Ray package from John Mayer will hit stores, featuring a December 2007 show at Los AngelesNokia Theatre. The as-yet-untitled project includes an acoustic performance, a full-band set and Mayer’s performance with his Trio, featuring drummer Steve Jordan and bassist Pino Palladino.

Batman Begins Blu-ray Specs

Batman Begins, scheduled to be released on July 8th, will come in two versions: a standard Blu-ray or a limited edition Blu-ray gift set. Extras include 12 featurettes and theatrical trailers.

The release will also feature an “In Movie Experience”  PIP commentary track that is compatible with BonusView Blu-ray players (PlayStation 3 and Panasonic DMP-BD30).

Exclusive to the Blu-ray release is the six-minute prologue from the upcoming theatrical release of The Dark Knight, set to hit theaters on July 18th.

The limited edition set will include a motion art lenticular, script pages, exclusive photos, storyboards, five collectible postcards, and $7.50 in movie cash.
